Eight & Bob – a fragrance with a history.
Albert Fouquet, was a French aristocrat who lived in Paris at the beginning of XXth century. He created different fragrances helped by his butler Philippe and he liked to amaze his guests and friends when he participated to parties and receptions by showing his creations. His perfumes and colonies started to be known by the Parisian noble class of the time and he was receiving a lot of demands to sell his secret formulas, which he always refused.
A summer night of 1937, during his holidays in “Côte d’Azur”, Albert was talking pleasantly with a blond young American student. Handsome, elegant and sporty the young student was driving across France with a large convertible car: his name was John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
The future president of the United States of America was impressed by the perfume that Albert was wearing, he liked it so much, that the following morning Albert decided to leave a little bottle of his night colony as a gift at the hotel were John was lodged. Together with the fragrance there was a little message on a piece of paper: “In this vial there is the French touch missing from your American personality”.
Back from his holidays Albert received letter signed by John Fitzgerald Kenney who thanked him a lot for his kind gesture and informed him that the colony was already a great success among his closest friends. John begged Albert to prepare at least “eight samples and if possible one for Bob”
Albert was happy to satisfy the request of John and asked his butler Philippe to get some special glass bottle he saw in a pharmacy downtown Paris. After they found the right bottles Albert decided to put a label on them , and he named the fragrances “EIGHT & BOB” following the request of JFK.
A few months later Albert could not believe to the number of letters he was receiving from the USA, they were coming from famous Hollywood actors, producers and directors, among them Cary Grant and James Stewart.
They all asked for “EIGHT & BOB” fragrance!
Unfortunately the success of the colony stopped in spring 1939, when Albert died in a car crash around Biarritz in France. Philippe, the butler, was the only one who could carry on the creation of the fragrances and he tried to continue at his best in his free time, but the beginning of World War II forced him to leave his job as well as Fouquet family. In the last shipments to America, Phillippe was hiding the bottles inside the books, that he skilfully cut on purpose, so that the Nazi controls of the parcels could not discover the content.
Today, thanks to historic search of Philippe family, the original secret formula of EIGHT & BOB has been totally recovered, keeping the refined production procedure and raw materials. EIGHT & BOB has come back as the preferred fragrance of the most elegant and fascinating men of the world.
