“Fragrance is liquid emotion. It can unlock memories and open doors; it can stop us in our ways, lost somewhere for a moment in time. Recollections triggered by a tangerine leaf or a jasmine blossom, a whisper of clove, a burst of juicy nectarine, a trail of smoky incense, a creamy cloud of vanilla.
Penhaligon’s adventure began in the Victorian era of decadence and continues until today striving to create original scents for the true “connaisseurs” of today. Real modern dandies and daring women who are proud to go their own way.
The spirit of William Penhaligon, the founder, is always present in every creation. A stylish English gentlemen living in an age of excess and flamboyance, William was witty, wildly creative and always inspired by the eccentric.
Arrived in London from native Cornwall in 1860, William Henry Penhaligon opened a barber shop in Jermyn Street.
From 1870 he started having a flourishing business activity by selling Eau de Toilette and Shaving Creams for his refined clients.
His first fragrance, HAMMAM BOUQUET, was created in 1872, for the elegant customers of the HAMMAM TURKISH BATH of Jermyn Street, and it is produced still today according to the original formula.
In 1902 he created BLENHEIM BOUQUET, named from the palace of the Dukes of Marlborough, the became the favourite fragrance on the aristocracy of the time.
Even today Penhaligon’s fragrances are made in England using the most precious ingredients from all over the world. The famous Penhaligon’s fragrance bottle is still like the original design: transparent glass with a distinctive ribbon.
